Making A Video In Nature

I have just finished shooting a video that I have been attempting to make for the last two years. It has proved to be lengthy and tricky to get all the required factors together on one day (or two in this case) the weather, the water levels, the Swans, the cameraman and me in an inspired mood!

The following photo by Kiordian Deren is of the flooded Lee Valley, Macroom, County Cork, Ireland. Ever since I first saw the place, I was inspired by its photographic possibilities.

The black shapes on the water are drowned trees, contorted into strange shapes.  There are often Swans on the water and there is a marked and beautiful contrast between the moving white graceful birds and the dark static stumps.  I am now looking forward to getting down to the editing stage – hopefully this won’t take so long!

Music Made Using Natural Sounds

This is first piece of music that I have made, solely using  sounds recorded around me.  A bird singing, farm gates being banged and ice cracking as I trod on frozen puddles.

Bird Song and Ice

Its interesting and has some nice rythms, but I think that it will take a lot more work to combine sounds to create an emotionally charged piece of music.  This is quirky and fun in my opinion.  Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think.

Video and Music Inspired by Nature

I was first inspired to create videos in nature by a flock of Rooks. They used to fly over me at dawn and dusk, to and from their feeding grounds. It was especially in the mist that they inspired me, when they came down low to the ground and perched in the trees around me. Their dark forms sweeping and soaring in the evening light.  It was then that I thought how wonderful it would be to be able to ‘capture’ the sight of them on video.

Woman of the Birds was the film that eventually ensued from that desire.  The video didn’t really quite capture the birds and the atmosphere as I had imagined, because it wasn’t quite misty enough on the evening that we did the filming.
